Item Description
A very hard to find Pyromorphite specimen from the Upper Giant Prospect in the Hunter District of Idaho. While the Bunker Hill Mine is most famous locality for Pyromorphite in Idaho (and arguably all of the United States), the Upper Giant Prospect lies about 30 miles southeast, and worked briefly in the 1970s, producing some attractive specimens . There are few smaller localities in this district that produced green Pyromorphites, but in very limited quantities, and the Upper Giant specimens are certainly the best known, few as they may be. This piece is filled with sharp, well-formed, hexagonal prisms of muted olive-green colored Pyromorphite measuring up to 4 mm, on what appears to be a layer of dark brown-black Psilomelane, on host rock matrix. The piece is in very good condition, with almost no damage. If you collect worldwide Pyromorphites, minerals of the US, or you just like esoteric locality pieces, be sure to pick this one up as they are nearly impossible to find on the market, and really only exist in old comprehensive worldwide collections like this. From the collection of Kurt Hefendehl (#161 US), a well-known German collector all over Europe with worldwide contacts to dealers and collectors. He started collecting seriously at the age of 14 and his great and varied worldwide collection reached over 6000 pieces. He was very active mineralogically until shortly before his passing in 2020 at the age of 82. Considering his collection had a large number of pieces, it still had an unusually high standard of quality from most worldwide localities. He particularly specialized in all classics as well as minerals of the Black Forest, where he spent much time collecting. His Black Forest and German subcollections went to his good friend Wolfgang Wendel. We at The Arkenstone have the privilege of offering the remainder of this great worldwide collection over the coming months and years through our various platforms.
