Pyromorphite on Galena ore (Reynolds Coll.)

Item Description

Donated to the auction in memory of the late collector Bob Reynolds, this is a beautiful and large, heavy cluster of pyromorphite crystals from his extensive lead minerals suite. The piece features large, curving crystals of root beer brown pyromorphite, with the good luster you sometimes see from here - most are dull in comparison. We are told these came out in the 1960s (note Scott Williams label from that era - noting it was in his personal collection). An older label we do not recognize is also present. The piece is very heavy because it is actually pyromorphite on galena, something rather unusual as most of these are simply solid masses of pyro. We do not know if that makes it from an older find we are unaware of, or is it just an outlier from the 1960s finds, with an unusual matrix? In any case, it is certainly an important locality specimen from an important Aussie locality. Donated by Rob Lavinsky.
