Pyromorphite (old - classic locale)

Item Description

Oil-green, fluted pyromorphite prisms, to 8 mm, are artistically festooned on three sides of this showy and very rich miniature from the historic Wheatley Mines. Many of the crystals are strongly hoppered, adding a striking visual aspect to the piece. The mines started in 1851 and were closed by the late 1860s. They were briefly reopened from 1917 to 1920. See the 1989 Mineralogical Record article in Vol. 20, No. 5. Formerly in the John Marshall Collection, a well-known East Coast pyromorphite specialist, who passed away in 2008. Ex George Loud Collection No. 1729, a well-known Washington, DC and South Carolina mineral collector. He acquired the specimen from John in 1993.
