Item Description
Lustrous, apple-green, hexagonal pyromorphite prisms, to 1.2 cm, richly and attractively cover the sculptural quartz-rich matrix on this showy, excellent and classic combination specimen from Bavaria. Probably from the ancient fluorite Max Mine, abandoned in 1975 and known for bright green pyromorphites, such as this. From the worldwide mineral collection of Albert Lewis Kidwell (January 1, 1919 - August 16, 2008). Al was a well-known mineral collector and research geologist with Carter Oil Company and later Exxon Oil Company in Houston, Texas. The phosphate species Kidwellite was named in his honor in 1974. Al acquired this colorful and rich piece in 1967, before the mine closed. The piece displays well from either side.
