Item Description
This vintage Pyromorphite specimen is from the Roughton Gill Mine, the most famous producer of choice specimens among the ancient lead mines in the Caldbeck Fells area. The fine Pyromorphite crystals here range up to 5 mm, and the green color and glassy luster accentuate the classic, slightly-curving hexagonal habit. The crystals are translucent, with slight variations adding to the visual character and interest. Likely collected the early 1800s when many lead specimens ended up at the smelters, pieces were usually rescued by managers, mine owners, and the like. Consequently, these high-quality, old-time specimens are rarely available on the mineral market today. Recently deaccessed from the Tim Sherburn collection. He had valued this at $400, his cost some years ago.
