Item Description

Lustrous, grass-green pyromorphite barrels to 6 mm very richly and attractively cover the front, side and back of the wedge of gossan matrix on this showy and most excellent, old-time specimen from the historic Wheatley Mine. The mine was started in 1851 and closed in the 1860s during the Civil War! Truly old-time material. Many of the crystals have hoppered terminations. Scattered trivial bruising is noted, but is barely noticeable, in the dense coverage. This is a very rich and aesthetic, two-sided example of the species and locale, especially when you consider the age of the piece. Most pyromorphite collectors must have one or more of these rarities for their collections to be complete. Ex John Schneider Pyromorphite Collection. Valued at $1250 as a superb, rare locality piece from one of the most important old US mines in terms of economic and cultural impact in its day. BETTER IN PERSON
