Item Description

Bizarre and fascinating crystallized pyrite nodule from a one-time 2001 highway widening project in Dallas County. Lustrous, brassy pyrite cubes, some with interesting hoppered faces and others with secondary pyrite overgrowths are aesthetically clustered on the highly unusual rounded organic shaped pyrite nodule. The prominent cube with the hoppered face is 1.6 cm. The broken end reveals the nodule is solid microcrystalline pyrite. These were recovered from the Cretaceous-age Eagle Ford Shale. Texas is known mostly as a mineral wasteland, but this is certainly a striking exception.
