Item Description

This famous Canadian locality is best known for its unique and unusual crystallized Pyrite specimens. The highly modified crystals from Nanisivik are immediately recognizable with their often brilliant / splendent faces and beautiful morphology. The crystals on this specimen are predominantly pyritohedral, and feature dodecahedral, octahedral, and cubic modifications creating intricate, yet very well-formed crystals that measure up to 1.6 cm across. I can see what I believe to be some tiny diploid faces on the crystals as well! The faces are incredibly SMOOTH and LUSTROUS with brilliant brassy color. A few minor imperfections keep the piece from being 100% perfect, but the overall quality is superb for the locality and Pyrite in general. My favorite aspect of the piece is that the Pyrites sit UP above the matrix, and they're not so tightly intergrown that you can't discern one from another. They have decent separation and distinguishing characteristics that allow them to be appreciated on an individual level. Superb beautiful material, and one of the best Nanisivik Pyrites we've had to offer in the auctions in some time. Valued $3,000.
From the collection of Kurt Hefendehl (#85 CA), a well-known German collector all over Europe with worldwide contacts to dealers and collectors. He started collecting seriously at the age of 14 and his great and varied worldwide collection reached over 6000 pieces. He was very active mineralogically until shortly before his passing in 2020 at the age of 82. Considering his collection had a large number of pieces, it still had an unusually high standard of quality from most worldwide localities. He particularly specialized in all classics as well as minerals of the Black Forest, where he spent much time collecting. His Black Forest and German subcollections went to his good friend Wolfgang Wendel. We at The Arkenstone have the privilege of offering the remainder of this great worldwide collection for the coming months/years through our various platforms.
