Pyrite sun

This weird pyrite "sun" specimen is an example of a strange artifact of the American Midwest, that I grew up with buying as a child and seldom see these days. This is actually a really good one! It is lustrous, pristine and well formed, double sided pyrite (sun) specimen. Many people seem to think that these originate in some kind of nucleation event from biological material that provided the sulfur in the center, with the iron coming from percolating water through the soft shales, as they turned into slate. The metamorphic rock hardens after, and preserves the relatively delicate pyrite growths within for hundreds of millions of years. Totally unique to the American Midwest, these are now rare in any quality.
