Item Description
A classic and very showy Indiana pyrite nodule from this well-known quarry on the southern edge of Indianapolis, where this was common material collected "at night" or on weekends from a working limestone gravel quarry. The sculptural oblate sphere is composed of multiple generations of variably-sized, brilliant luster, brassy, octahedral pyrite crystals. The piece is dramatically highlighted by the last generation of large octahedrons on the display face. These crystals reach 2.0 cm on edge. The attachment is at the base and the piece displays well without aid. This 100-year old quarry is now closed and specimens from here are seldom on the market today. When I was a kid, I used to deal in these a lot, and bought from the miners. Today, you seldom see them around. Valued at $350-500.
