Item Description

Mirror-bright, brassy metallic pyritohedrons are densely intergrown on this very rich and showy small cabinet from the famous and extinct Au-Ag-Pb-Zn mines at Leadville. The prisms reach 1.6 cm (on top) and prism faces are both striated and unstriated, adding interest. Pyrite was a primary sulfide from the district and specimens are highly desired today. Placer gold mining started in 1860 and the last mine closed in 1998. Mining glory days were from the 1870s to 1890s (silver) and from around 1900 to the 1930s (zinc, lead and silver). From an East Coast collection. A seldom seen, rich, old Colorado classic.
