Item Description

The famous Trepča Stari Trg Mine in Kosovo is the most productive and famous locality in the country. Early mining dates back at least 700 years, and the mine is still active today after being shut down during war in Kosovo in the late 1990s. The minerals that you'll see from this well-known locale are quite similar to orebody specimens from various mines in Peru, the San Juan Mountains of Colorado, or Dalnegorsk, Russia, though Fluorite is notably absent from the Trepča material. This piece is a very fine quality Pyrite from recent mining at Trepča featuring an intergrown cluster of sharp, very well-formed, lustrous, metallic, soft golden colored, striated, modified octahedra / pyritohedral crystals of Pyrite measuring up to 1.3 cm, associated with minor prismatic, colorless, gemmy Quartz crystals, and no matrix. Most of the Pyrites you'll see from this locality can features smaller and sometimes non-descript crystals, but THIS piece is certainly better than most in terms of the size and quality of the crystals. If you're a fan of sulfides, worldwide Pyrites or if you just like well-crystallized display quality mineral specimens, don't pass this one up.
