Item Description

The Huanzala Mine in Peru is one of the great localities in the world for crystallized Pyrite, producing some of the most breathtaking specimens from any locality in the world. This showy and fine quality small cabinet piece is a fantastic display specimen featuring excellent, sharp, highly lustrous (splendent), metallic soft golden colored crystals measuring up to 4.1 cm, free of matrix. The crystals are predominantly octahedral in habit, but they have attractive cubic modifications on the tips A bit of damage on the outer areas, but good shape on the display side. Keep in mind that octahedral Pyrite is not common from any locality, mostly Butte, Montana and various Mines in Peru are the only good sources for octahedral Pyrite crystals. From Brian Kosnar, by way of the collection of Rebecca Stewart and Steve Sinotte. For reference, this locality used to be in the Huallanca District, Dos de Mayo Province, Huánuco Department of Peru, but the borders were redrawn, and now it lies in the Bolognesi Province of the Áncash Department (you can see the Huanuco in listed on the label from Rebecca Stewart and Steve Sinotte). I would value this one in the range of about $1,800.
