Item Description
The iron mines of Elba, most of which are long-closed, were choice collecting localities for mineral enthusiasts as far back as the beginning of the 19th century. Pyrite specimens such as this one were especially prized. The individual crystals, modified pyritohedrons, reach 5 cm in size, and the luster and bright golden color are excellent. Considering its likely age, this is a very fine old classic of Elba pyrite. I am told this is typical of the best material which came out in some special pockets both in the early 1900s and again in a find of the early 1970s. Previously in the collection of Louis Zara of New York. From the large worldwide collection of historical minerals, of George Elling of New Jersey.
