Item Description

This specimen is labeled only as coming from "Peru", and it's hard to say specifically where it was found, so we're leaving it as labeled. With that said, it's a very attractive specimen featuring a predominant 2.5 cm crystal of golden metallic Pyrite associated with several accenting Pyrites on Quartz matrix. The habit of the crystal is a combination of pyritohedral and octahedral faces, which is not often seen from Peru in my experience, especially because there is such balance between the two habits on this crystal. Usually you'll find octahedrons with tiny pyritohedral modifications or vice versa, but this crystal represents both habits equally. The piece is in good shape overall, minimal roughness. A really cool piece for any fan of Pyrites, sulfides, Peruvian minerals or fans of morphology. From the collection of Robert (Bob) Reynolds who passed in August of 2020. Bob was a well-known fossil and mineral expert and former Curator of Earth Sciences at the San Bernardino County Museum in California. The rare phyllomanganate-chromate species Reynoldsite was named in his honor in 2011.
