Pyrite

Item Description

Massive large cabinet sized Pyrite specimen from the Quiruvilca Mine, Peru. The piece is highlighted by well defined, varying sized, metallic brass yellow individual crystals up to 1.5 cm on edge. The crystals mostly show a cubic habit with modified edges and subtle stepped growth complexities. The Pyrites have highly detailed striations that add a reflected light sparkle. There is associated pockets of a botryoidal white to tan Calcite in front with Calcite covering a larger portion of the back. Areas of the Calcite have a blue to blue-green tinting/coating of an unknown, possible copper-based mineral. The piece is from the Kurt Hefendehl collection and the low catalogue number of P16 would indicate the specimen is probably from older finds - 1980s. While it is not in pristine condition with some chipping and bruising to several Pyrites, it still has a commanding presence that provides a sizable and dramatic display to any shelf.
