Item Description

An aesthetic and outstanding thumbnail cluster of sharp, lustrous, battleship-gray pyrargyrite crystals from the famous Rayas Mine at Guanajuato, Mexico. The sharp crystals have striking stepped-growth terminations with iridescence! A classic and fine silver sulfosalt specimen from this well-known locality. This piece is from "El Clavo de Rayas" meaning the Rayas Oreshoot. This was a famous very high grade oreshoot in the Rayas Mine portion of the Veta Madre. It was famous both for high grade ores and wonderful silver mineral specimens (Information from Peter Megaw, to whom I extend my thanks). Pyrargyrite is one of the four "ruby silver" species along with polybasite, proustite and miargyrite. The backlit photo shows the gorgeous, cherry-red, "ruby silver" gemminess. Complete all-around. Contacting on the back and one side are noted, but have little damage, per se. Ex Consie Prince Collection.
