Item Description

Psilomelane is an obsolete group name for hard black manganese oxides. It is known to have occurred in many of the mines in the historic Bisbee District, but is very rare as preserved specimens. This is an amazing lattice work of intergrown, hollow, very light weight, purple-gray, botryoidal psilomelane stalactites. The yellow-orange-brown iron oxide coatings at the top really add color and character to this surreal piece. Probably old material, but no proof. Ex Bob Trimingham Collection. Purchased from George and Susan Robinson in 1979 and apparently from the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum, according to his label. A must for the locality or species collector.
