Item Description

Prehnite is a well-known species, found in a myriad of colors and styles from hundreds of world localities. It has been said that Prehnite was the first species named after a person, in this case, Hendrik von Prehn, the former governor of the Cape of Good Hope, who is credited with discovering the mineral in 1774 in South Africa. Starting in the early 2000s, the Kayes Region in Mali surprisingly started producing some of the most attractive, displayable and abundant specimens of Prehnite (often associated with Epidote) that had been found. These distinctive pieces feature fine green color spherical groups of Prehnite, often in pleasingly aesthetic specimens. This piece is a showy and three-dimensional cabinet filled with attractive "water green" color, translucent, spherical groups of Prehnite which are sitting on dark greenish, lustrous, prismatic crystals of Epidote on minor matrix. The largest Prehnite "ball" measures 1.0 cm across, and the largest Epidote measures 2.2 cm long. The vast majority of the Prehnites are undamaged, though the lower back section of the piece is contacted where it was separated from the pocket. Overall it's a very presentable and excellent example of what will be some of the most well-known and iconic Prehnite specimens from any world locality.
From the worldwide mineral collection of geologist, Demetrius Pohl from Los Angeles.
