Item Description
Prehnite is one of those gems that doesn't get a lot of attention from collectors, mostly because it's not often found in truly gem-grade material. Most Prehnites are often translucent (sometimes ranging up to subtransparent) and the colors fall somewhere in the yellow to green end of the spectrum. The majority of the Prehnite gems you'll find on the market are cut into cabochons and actual faceted stones are not terribly common. Although there has been a good amount of gem-grade Prehnite coming out of Mali in recent years, you don't see a lot of Prehnite from other world localities on the market very often. This stone is from the famed Prospect Park Quarry in New Jersey, which is known for its excellent Prehnite specimens, sometimes gemmy enough to produce good stones. This stone has a "Round Brilliant" cut with a soft "water green" color, and a soft internal translucence. A hard to find example that would make a nice addition to any US gem collection, or it could be paired up with a specimen to make a nice rough and cut set.
