Item Description
The famed Jeffrey Mine in Quebec is one of the great Canadian localities, producing a large number of beautiful, often colorful display specimens. While minerals like Grossular Garnet and Vesuvianite are the staples from this giant open pit mine, there are some excellent crystallized Prehnites from Jeffrey. While green is the most common color for Prehnite, it's not terribly common from the Jeffrey Mine, and this piece is one of the best green Prehnites that we've had to offer from the auctions. This piece is filled with excellent, very good sized, sharp, blocky, well-formed, lustrous, "water green" colored prismatic crystals of Prehnite measuring up to 1.4 cm on a thin bit of matrix. There are some narrow bi-colored crystals of Diopside on the piece as well for a nice touch. There are a few contacted areas, so the piece is not pristine, but it's largely undamaged. From the collection of Richard ("Dick") Philip Hauck formerly of Bloomfield, New Jersey and now a resident of Franklin, New Jersey. Dick is an avid collector of minerals, books, and mining memorabilia, along with being an accomplished author in the mineral world. Arguably, his greatest claim to fame is being the co-founder of the Sterling Hill Mining Museum in Ogdensburg, NJ. Dick purchased the land on which the Sterling Hill Mine resides in 1988, and the museum has been running strong since.
