Opal almost occupies its own category in the gem world, because it's notably diverse in terms of the various styles and colors in which it occurs. The distinctiveness of Opal can be explained due to the fact that it is one of the few stones that looks just as attractive when it's crystal clear as it does when the stones are opaque. Despite it's rather simplistic chemistry, Opals show a great range of color in many varieties. This "Round Cabochon" cut gem is what is often called "Crystal Opal", with a white background hosting brilliant multicolor flashes of pink, orange and green, which show up in strong reflected light. As you can see, the stone shows fairly good color, and it's important to mention that this is a solid Opal, not a doublet or a triplet, which makes a difference when it comes to the value, as solid Opals are always worth more than doublets or triplets. It's also important to note that this gem is from Brazil, not the typical Australian Opals that you're used to seeing on the market.
