Precious Opal

A classic piece of the famous Precious Opal from the renowned locality at Virgin Valley. This piece features an outer "rind" of somewhat iridescent, translucent Precious Opal which shows gentle blue, green and purple tones in reflected light, but when it's backlit, the color changes to rich warm golden and orange hues. At the "core" of the piece is an earlier dark purplish-brown generation of Opal, creating a very stark contrast with the outer layer. The Opal needs a strong light to show off the color, but it's really pretty when viewed up close. This material is nearly impossible to obtain these days, and is very worthwhile for collectors because it's not just a mineral specimen, nor a gem but a combination of both.
