Powellite (RARE gemmy green crystals)

Powellite is a fairly rare calcium molybdate species, and some of, if not the finest examples of the species are found in the Deccan Trap in India. Typically the Powellites from this area are a variation of yellow, whether it be a pastel hue or a rich golden shade, but THIS piece is different and rare as the crystals are clearly GREEN, which is almost never seen in the species. Adding to the already rare color is the fact that the crystals are GEMMY, which is only seen in small percentage of Indian Powellites. The crystals range from blocky to more of a tapered habit, and look beautiful up close. The largest Powellite measures 1.2 cm long. Under UV light, they show a strong yellow fluorescence, a sure sign that this is Powellite. The underlying soft pink colored Heulandite crystals make for the perfect contrast against the Powellite. While there is no real damage, the Powellites have a bit of etching on the base of the crystals, which give them a lighter translucent appearance, but they are not broken. This is a rarity, and if you collect minerals from India or your just love odd and beautiful examples of any species, look no further. It's hard to put a fair market value on a piece like this, but I would put it in the $1,500 range for the rare color and fine transparent quality.
