Item Description
A rarely seen specimen featuring a pair of nickel sulfides from this locality in western Illinois (very close to the Mississippi River). Sharp, rhombic crystals of what would ordinarily be colorless Calcite are included with fibrous grey crystals of Polydymite and Millerite (according to the label) sitting on matrix. The largest Calcite measures 1.3 cm. This is more of a reference specimen than anything, but it's hard to find this material on the market, and this piece dates back several decades. I haven't seen many of these over the years, and it's worth picking up if you collect minerals of the US or sulfides. The accompanying label from Carousel Minerals mentions and article in the Mineralogical Record (Vol. 1, No. 4; July - August 1970), where I presume this material is mentioned.
