Item Description

Gorgeous blue color on the sawed and polished face and base of this attractive and sculptural miniature Larimar nodule. Pectolite, a fairly common Na-Ca silicate, is member of the Wollastonite Group and is the calcium analogue of Serandite. It is usually found as radiating botryoids of acicular crystals or as gemmy, colorless prisms. Larimar is the trade name that is designated to the light blue, massive pectolite from the Dominican Republic. The material is typically opaque, but sometimes slightly translucent. The actual name "Larimar" is a combination of "Larissa", which was the name of the daughter of Dominican geologist, Miguel Mendez who originally named the material, and "Mar", which is the Spanish word for sea, as it resembles the crystal blue Caribbean Sea. This material is only found in one place in the world, and is becoming increasingly popular among collectors, jewelers and dealers. 67 grams mass.
