Item Description

Bright rich blood-red columns of striated cinnabar dramatically cover the sawed and polished nodule on this impressive rich specimen from a very important California mercury mining region, known for historical production and closed for over half a century now The sawed and polished front reveals fascinating rich blood-red slickensided cinnabar, that was emplaced along a tear fault of the hydrothermally Hg-rich fluids injected into the indurated beds near a thrust fault. Slickensides are a polished and striated rock surface that results from friction along a fault or bedding plane. Although listed as California without a specific mine name in the collection, it most certainly came from the old extinct New Idria Mine, discovered in 1853. RARE and rich mercury ore of this style from an important California locale. Ex Chet Lemanski Collection.
