Item Description

A superb and rare killer thumbnail pair of dramatically intergrown floater pink sapphire crystals from Limpopo, South Africa. The textbook hexagonal lustrous crystals have beautiful pink color, when back lit. Ex Kay Robertson Collection # 5131 and acquired in 1967. Kay's label says the piece is from Springbok in Namaqualand, but Springbok is copper country and MINDAT does not list corundum. Kay is a prominent California collector, who specialized in European classics (see the article in the March-April, 2007 Mineralogical Record and the 50+ page article in the German Magazine "Mineralien Welt" November-December 2017). Exceptional, perhaps unique 360-degree pink sapphire with cherry-red fluorescence.
