Item Description

The Phosgenite crystals from the Monteponi Mine in Sardinia are among the finest examples of the species ever found. They are rarely seen on the market today, and they are true classics, dating back to the early 1900s. This small cabinet specimen is a fine quality, doubly-terminated, classic, sharp, gemmy, thick tabular lustrous Phosgenite crystal group, free of matrix, from this historic locale. The crystal has a pleasant sandy/smoky hue, indicative of the material. A classic and textbook specimen with only minor imperfections in a few spots due to some incomplete and slightly skeletal growth. It's almost a complete "floater" and is crystallized all over. Under longwave UV light, the piece fluoresces a yellow hue. An historic specimen from what is the most famous Phosgenite locality in the world. The article in the Mineralogical Record (Vol 45, No. 6 - 2014) details this amazing locality, and specimens like this are not common on the market. Priced at $3,500 in our inventory. From the collection of Dr. Vasco Trancoso, a medical doctor and systematic mineral collector from Portugal (https://www.mindat.org/user-11954.html). This piece is pictured on mindat.org at https://www.mindat.org/photo-184279.html
