Phlogopite mica

Item Description

Imposing at 40 cm across, this huge sheet of golden-brown Phlogopite is impressive for both size and its own type of beauty. The color is rich and deep, and the highly-reflective, vitreous luster gives it a glassy appearance. Pegmatitic in nature, there was no definitive location with this piece, though research over the years has led to a 'best guess' of either Chester Co., PA, or St. Lawrence Co., NY. Both locations were represented in the collection. Formerly in the collections of Henry Carvill Lewis and the Philadelphia Academy of Sciences. A very heavy, impressive reference example of the old big "book muscovite" style.
