Item Description
Mt. Antero is well-known for its beautiful Aquamarine crystals are excellent Phenakites. This piece is a quaint little Phenakite rhomb, with sharp, well-formed, lustrous faces, but its real value lies in its pedigree. This specimen comes from the collection of Willard W (1904-1998) of Colorado Springs, Colorado, a prominent figure and collector of Colorado minerals, and one of the founding members of the Colorado Springs Mineralogical Society in 1936. It's accompanied by one of Wulff's labels that states the specimen was collected by fellow CSMS founding member and field collecting legend, Edwin J. Over (1905-1963). Ed Over personally collected minerals all over the western United States, and famously found the finest Wulfenites at the Red Cloud Mine in Arizona, along with superb Epidotes from Prince of Wales Island in Alaska, and he famous collected the world-famous Variscite nodules from Utah. A wonderfully historic piece of this well known material from approximately 75-85 years ago. You can read Ed Over's biography here ( https://mineralogicalrecord.com/biographies_labels/overedwin-j/ ) and Willard Wulff's biography here ( http://www.minrec.org/labels.asp?page=1&colid=324 ). Please note that this is a reference specimen, and not a killer display piece, but it's a good overall Antero Phenakite, and the fact that it was found by Ed Over is significant and worth owning in my mind. From the collection of Brian Kosnar.
