Item Description
A very choice, naturally water-shaped nodule of this classic Michigan carving stone and collectible material, which is actually a fossilized colonial coral, Hexagonaria percarinata. According to Wikipedia, it is named “Petoskey stone” after the Ottawa Chief Pe-to-se-ga (Rising Sun), because the material’s pattern resembles sun rays. State stone of Michigan since 1965. Although these are familiar specimens and available widely in the area, this one has uncommonly good aesthetics for quality and pattern! Comes with handwritten note from the original finder. Like many such specimens, this one has been lightly polished to show off the pattern better. Suitable for lapidary use. 211 carats.
