Item Description

A nice reference specimen of the uncommon but iconic Perovskite and black Andradite Garnets (var: Melanite) from San Benito County, California . This piece comes to us from the collection of Tim Sherburn, who personally collected the piece in on February 28, 1986. No specific locality was given, but I have seen a lot of these pieces labeled only as coming from near the famous Gem Mine, best known for its Benitoite crystals. This piece features a few sharp, metallic, cuboctahedral crystals of Perovskite associated with dozens of tiny, very sharp, highly lustrous, jet black, opaque dodecahedral crystals of Melanite on Serpentine matrix. The largest Perovskite measures about 2.5 mm on edge. Overall the piece is in very good shape. If you collect Perovskite, Garnets, California minerals or general US display pieces, this is a nice reference specimen of this lesser-seen material.
