Perovskite (classic material)

Item Description

Here we have a wonderful cabinet sized specimen of Perovskite from the type locality in Russia. Perovskite is a calcium titanium oxide, named after Count Lev Perovski, a Russian nobleman and mineral collector. He served as the Minister of Internal Affairs under Nicholas I of Russia and developed an initiative to begin mining many deposits in Russia. This piece features rather lustrous, sharp, well-formed, metallic silvery-brown colored pseudo-cubic (orthorhombic) crystals of Perovskite measuring up to 1.1 cm on edge associated with minor etched Calcite on matrix. Perovskite crystals are in great shape, and most of them are complete. You don't see many Perovskite specimens on the market like this, and cabinet sized examples are certainly hard to find. From the collection of Richard ("Rich") A. Kosnar (1946-2007), the well-known mineral dealer and mineral collector from Colorado, who was the namesake for the rare phosphate species Kosnarite.
