Item Description

From the type locality for this well known but somewhat elusive calcium titanium oxide, here is a beautiful matrix thumbnail display specimen of Perovskite! A stout 1.6 cm pseudocubic (orthorhombic) crystal of steel-grey Perovskite sits atop greenish schist matrix. A few tiny nicks here and there (and contacted on the back), but still very good shape overall. The locality at Akhmatovskaya Kop' (Achmatovsk Mine), dates back over 200 years and is one of the most significant metamorphic skarn localities in Russia. Perovksite was discovered by Gustav Rose in 1839 and is named after Russian mineralogist Lev Perovski (1792-1856). Ever after all these years, the Russian specimens remain as some of the best examples in the world of the species. The piece comes with a label from Cal Graeber, originally priced at $375, but worth more today.
