Item Description
A great showy cabinet sized display piece of the famous Orpiment specimens from the Jiepaiyu Mine in China. These are some of the most impressive Orpiment specimens in the world for their size, color and crystal quality. The entry for this locality on mindat.org states that this mine is, "the largest carbonate-hosted arsenic deposit in Asia and the largest Realgar mine in China". Additionally, the locality has been mined for 1,500 years! This piece is filled with good quality, sharp, well-formed, prismatic, red-orange colored crystals of Orpiment measuring up to 1.8 cm long on matrix. With backlighting, the Orpiment crystals show decent translucency. Most of the crystals are in good shape, but there is some peripheral damage where the piece was removed from the pocket wall. Small spots of rich red Realgar can be seen on the piece as well. Valued at $1,400. From the collection of Vasco Trancoso, a medical doctor and prominent mineral collector from near Lisbon, Portugal (https://www.mindat.org/user-11954.html). He assembled his mineral collection over the course of 60 years, and built a fine worldwide display collection that we recently purchased.
