Item Description

Lumaschelle or muschelmarmor (German) is a sedimentary rock containing opalescent shells and shell or ammonite fragments showing brilliant to muted, mainly green to red reflections. This striking and beautiful layer of Triassic limestone is from the historic Bleiberg District of Austia and the composition is called shell hash by geologists, as it consists almost entirely of fragments of mollucs, in this case. The shell layer is 1 mm to about 1.0 cm thick and rests on a shale matrix. This is a serious old-timer from the collection of Herb Obodda # 2108. It probably dates to the early to middle 19th Century or earlier.
