Item Description
This is a gorgeous SPECIMEN quality example of the classic boulder opal from Queensland, so long prized in the mainstream gem and jewelry trade. If cut up into pieces, there are thousands of dollars of lapidary material contained on the surface here, but that would be a tragedy. As you can see, by the previous Smithsonian residence, it is a worthy specimen on its own! Obtained by Walt Lidstrom from the museum in one of his legendary exchanges, it was then sold to Jack long ago. Specimens like this are sold by the gram, if you see them for sale with direct source opal dealers at jewelry and gem shows, and they are not reasonably priced at all, these days.
