Onyx is opaque black (sometimes black and white banded) Chalcedony, which is a variety of Quartz. Some of the oldest known Onyx is found in Russia and it has some of the purest black color that you'll find for the material. This stone is virtually 100% black, with essentially no banding. It is an opaque and very well polished "Square Cabochon" cut gem. A very good quality Onyx, and a nice representative "black" stone for a collector.
