Item Description
Here we have a ridiculously rare association specimen featuring Nullaginite (a nickel carbonate only found in FOUR places in the world as of the time of this posting) along with Otwayite (another nickel carbonate only found in FIVE places in the world as of the time of this posting). The piece is from the Otway Ni deposit in Nullagine, Western Australia, Australia, which is the type locality for both species (both named for the locality). The Nullaginite is a stark green hue with a slight yellow overtone, and can be seen as coatings on multiple sides of the piece, while the Otwayite exists and thin veinlets of a brighter green hue. This specimen dates back to the late 1970s, and was presumably collected by Charles Otway, a prospector and miner from Western Australia who collected the first specimens at the locality (he is also the namesake for the species Otwayite). Certainly a must-have for any rarities collector, as they virtually non-existent in today's market. Don't miss out! From the collection of William ("Bill") (1927-2006) and Anne (1928-2021) Cook of Cleveland, Ohio (#7929) with a dealer label from Mineralogical Research Company (Gene and Sharon Cisneros), along with a collection label from Jack Parnau. Bill and Anne were actively involved in the mineral world for many decades. Bill was a PhD geologist, and Anne was a mathematician, and they both were very serious mineral collectors. Bill served for many years as adjunct curator of mineralogy at the Cleveland Museum of Natural History, and Anne was inducted into the Micromounters' Hall of Fame on October 12, 2019. Both Bill and Anne, at various times, served as president both of the Mineralogical Society of Cleveland and of the Micromineral Society of the Cleveland Museum of Natural History, and Anne was inducted into the mi The rare barium lithium beryllium phosphate Wilancookite was named in their honor in 2015.
