Item Description

This is a very sharp, unusually well formed crystal of this rare nickel arsenide from the famous mines at Obershlema, near Schneeberg, Saxony (Sachsen), Germany. It is possibly hundreds of years old, and certainly is not modern. This sharp crystallization is extremely rare for the species, and the 1.8 cm crystal in the center is considered huge, to be so sharply formed! The matrix is of crystalline Ni-skutterudite with minor Annabergite. Ralph E. Merrill Collection label (inventory #3078) and Merrill index card, which stated that in January 1984 he acquired it from the noted dealer Al McGuiness for $100.00 - quite a lot at the time for a thumbnail rare metallic. Ex: Ralph E. Merrill Collection. Valued today at $1000-plus.
