Neptunite is one of the most beautiful of the titanium group of minerals, known for its textbook sharpness and shockingly jet black hue. When sharp, lustrous, crystals are nicely balanced on white natrolite matrix, we consider these to be exceptional specimens that have artistic composition and are considered a higher level compared to the rest. For what it is worth, although the locality is not fully dead, it is nearly dead and the richest period of production is long in the past, making these historic classic American collectors items. Also, they are the best in the world. The location here is a freak of geology, not predictable or likely to occur anywhere else - and these neptunites are clearly best of species. This particular specimen is a fine and rare larger plate, with gorgeous neptunite well-separated on contrasting matrix of natrolite. The large cluster is 3.5 cm across, and the isolated crystal on the left is 2.5 cm. There is almost no other mineral find that gives you such stark black on white contrast and this is a fine example in the size class, valued $4000-plus.
