Item Description
Native iron is extremely rare in igneous rocks, even though it forms the majority of the Earth's core. This old-time specimen is from the Type Locality, remote Disko Island, Greenland and is a large nodule richly speckled with bright, metallic, rust-brown native iron. The native iron formed as nodules in basalt. This specimen probably dates to the late 1800s, but no proof. Ex Swedish Museum of Natural History in Stockholm and the Christian Rewitzer Collections. Hefty iron at 295 grams mass! THis is an amazing oldtime example for the material, complete and not sliced for analysis and study as so many were. Valued $750-1000
