Terrestrial native iron is rare because of the instabilitiy of iron under oxidizing conditons. It is also rare in igneous rocks, although it does form the majority of the earth's core. This is a RARE and rich polished slab of isolated different sized blebs of native iron in a diabase, an igneous rock similar to basalt and gabbro. It occurs mostly in shallow intrusions (dikes and sills) of basaltic composition. Specimens from this obscure Russian locale are rare and are seldom on the market. Ex David Burgess Collection and obtained from respected rarities dealer Josef Vajdak (Pequa Minerals). 45 grams mass. The old price was $500. It is worth more today.
