Item Description

Showy, excellent and RARE small cabinet combination from this famous old Oxford County pegmatite opened in 1894. A 3.5 cm section of tabular, hexagonal, lustrous, partially translucent, rare pastel-green Fluorapatite is jauntily embedded in the RARE, bone-white, prismatic, Montebrasite (a clay species) matrix. Most fluorapatite crystals from the Harvard Mine are purple. A 2.1 cm section of jet-black Schorl on the back of the apatite is a fine accessory. Faint greenish-white SW UV fluorite fluorescence. The original label has the matrix as Amblygonite, the fluorine analogue of Montebrasite. Vandall King, 1925-2005, well-known geologist, author, collector, dealer and long-time Editor of the Mineralogical Record believed the Amblygonite was Montebrasite. Amblygonite is discredited on the MINDAT locality website. See: https://www.mindat.org/loc-5926.html. Rare, highly representative combination material from the noted locale.
