This is the last of a small group of very fine, exceptionally display-worthy moldavite specimens we obtained from a collector, that features a well-formed piece with exquisite details, good color, and a good size for the collector. Moldavite, a rare gemstone from space as some call it, is considered a Tektite: a kind of natural glass formed from a meteorite impact melting local rock that got tossed up into the air and then rained down as molten blobs of glass, essentially freezing into these shapes as they fell. A quick google search confirms its unusual gemstone/glass/mineral status: The chemical formula of moldavite is SiO2(+Al2O3). Its properties are similar to those of other types of glass, and reported Mohs hardness varies from 5.5 to 7. Moldavites are named after the main occurrence found in the late 1800s, at the Moldau river in Southern Bohemia and the impact seems to have originated 15 million years ago. Mass is 41 grams.
