Item Description

Sometimes in marketing you will see Moldavite referred to as the "gem that fell to earth". This material is believed to have formed when a shower of meteorites fell in modern day Czech Republic within a one hundred mile area of the Vltava River (formerly called the Moldau, from which Moldavite gets its name). Moldavite is actually a tektite, and truly one-of-a-kind in terms of quality, composition and color. There are many theories as to the origins of Moldavite, but the inability of modern science to resolve the issues with a conclusive explanation causes it to remain one of the great mysteries of the gem / meteorite world. With that said, Moldavite is not often seen in mineral collections, as good pieces are not common on the market, and the majority of the material is often faceted into stones or placed into jewelry. This piece is an attractive curved "shell" of Moldavite with excellent color and gemminess, and the classic pseudo-etched exterior. This is classic material and really eye-catching to boot. It's safe to say that most minerals collectors do not have one their collections, and although it's a tektite, it's one of those items that seems to be almost ubiquitous in this hobby. Specimen weight is 10.058 grams.
