Item Description
RARE and impressive large block of mohawkite and quartz from the namesake Type Locality. The frontal face is polished to bring out the coppery metallic lustre. The striking quartz starbursts and thick quartz rind on top add dramatic character and contrast. Mohawkite is a rare mixture of algodonite, domeykite and arsenic-rich copper (and possibly further species) (MINDAT). It is unique to two mines in Copper Country, with the Mohawk Mine being the Type Locality. Massive large specimens, such as this, are rare because the rich ore was smelted or as seen generally today, it is polished as a lapidary object to bring out the rich golden-coppery color. Hefty at 1216 grams mass. Ex Betty Kaslaskie Collection.
