Item Description

Mohawkite is a rare local mixture of algodonite, domeykite and arsenic-rich copper (whitneyite) and is only found only two places in the world - both on the Keweenaw Peninsula. The Mohawk Mine is obviously the Type Locality. This is a rich polished slab. The polishing shows the pretty strong hints of coppery gold plus quartz or analcime and a bit of accenting copper. This particular piece was mined in the 1950s or earlier. From an East Coast collection and comes with a Hugh Ford label dating from 1946-57. Hefty at 308 grams mass. This is a very large and RARE sawed specimen of this species. Most are polished nuggets of smaller size.
