Item Description

An adorable and classic manganoan calcite miniature from this extinct large open pit and then deep underground Wisconsin iron mine. A complete all-around 2.5 cm pastel-pink manganoan calcite "bulb" is aesthetically set on the edge of the sculptural matrix plate. Pink fluorescence. The Montreal Mine opened in 1886 and closed in 1963. This exceptional old-timer probably dates to the 1950s. See the 2020 Mineralogical Record article in Vol. 51, No. 3. Formerly in the Gene and Sally Laberge Collection # 1429. Gene was a Geology Professor at the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh and the author of the book Geology of the Lake Superior Region. Read about Gene at: https://uwosh.edu/today/73001/professor-emeritus-gene-l-laberge-passes/. Ex Kyle Kevorkian Collection. A really cute and exceptional manganoan calcite from the locale.
